This was a beautiful portrait of a good and honorable man’s life, one whose principles of duty and right and wrong are derived from the Word of God. John is an orphan who does not know much about his past, and at 10 years old must find work or starve; even at that age, however, he wouldn’t stoop to beggary or theft. Throughout the story, you can see the Hand of Providence watching over him, as he is faithful to follow God’s ordinances. How he lives his life proves him a gentleman, no matter the details of his birth. The first half of the book was rather slow moving (hence, one less star) but after John marries, the book moves along much more quickly and I couldn’t put it down.Product details

John Halifax Gentleman edition by Dinah Maria Mulock Craik Reference eBooks Reviews
The story of a great life and love. If only all men and women could have a life this meaningful and a love this precious.
I enjoyed the book. It presented some dark sides of people and it was a different plot than the usual story. Would recommend.
Readers must realize that this is not your modern day John Grisham, Danielle Steele novel. It is a very interesting life story of a good man who was a gentleman even when his life circumstances were poor. It is told through the eyes of Phineas Fletcher, his friend. I cannot wait to read it again to catch things I missed the first time. Exceptional editing by Dr. Lynn Alexander makes it that much better.
I loved this book! It is my first book by this author and I am eager to begin a new one. The character development and values of the culture of the Halifax family were two attributes that I particularly enjoyed.
I had an old copy of this book with a few pages missing. And was delighted to find that it had been reprinted I loved this story it made wholesome reading & this book I can highly recommend.
This is a book that I think is so good, with such a good story line, it should be made into a movie. Talk about what a person can become if he sets his mind to it!!! The story exemplified honesty, hard work, kindness, integrity, friendship--so many good qualities that are needed today in our people, young and old.
John Halifax, Gentleman is the story of a David and Jonathon-like friendship. It is also about a long and happy marriage. But mostly it recounts the life of a man who never backs down from his principles. The book proposed the “revolutionary” idea that a man is not a gentleman primarily because of wealth and title, but because of integrity, honor and hard work.
This is a slow-moving but satisfying book. It uses old fashioned words like “discomfited” and “sententious”. But it is no more sentimental than, say, Little Women, and much less moralistic than Elsie Dinsmore. I have read novels in which the hero or heroine are too good to be true (Little Lord Fauntleroy comes to mind), but I did not find this to be the case with John Halifax.
A pleasant read.
